The first is that students must keep desks clean. We cleaned out desks and bags today and got rid of anything we don't need anymore. This will help students stay organized. I'll be walking around daily and checking to see that desks aren't getting out of hand. Students who have messy desks will be required to spend morning work time cleaning them (which means they'll need to catch up on morning work at home).
We also decided upon a list of things to keep in desks, and a list of things to keep in bags or bins. Students should only have binders, folders, notebooks, agenda, AR books, and their math book in their desk. All pencils, sharpeners, markers, erasers, etc. should be in a pencil case and kept in their bag (since they need these things in Ms. Heeren's class anyway). This should eliminate the collections of pencils and post-its and erasers that used to be found at the front of desks and could easily fall on the floor or be taken.
As a last resort, if a student is reporting to me that things from their desk continue to go missing, I'll have them flip their desk around when they leave the room so no one can get into it unless they turn it around (which would be very visible to me).
Also, all slime is officially banned from 303. Students should not bring it to school at all. They were all given a stress ball at the beginning of the year from me, and any other fidget-type item needs to be identified by an email from their parent explaining its use/need.
Hopefully this issue will blow over in a week or two and we can relax these desk regulations!
